South Bay Veterinary Specialists
Opened by Drs. Dougald Gilmore, Mark Parchman and Sue Dougherty in the summer of 1991, it was originally a daytime specialty practice with 3 veterinary specialists and 2 technicians. Since then it has grown to be both a specialty referral practice and 24 hour critical care center with 10 veterinary specialists, 18 veterinary technicians, and 11 office staff.  In September 2004, Dr. Mark Parchman and Dr. Sue Dougherty have sold their interest in SBVS and relocated to Bend, Oregon to open a new referral center. As we then entered into our 14th year, the SBVS partnership now included Dr. Dougald Gilmore as senior partner, along with Dr. Ravinder Dhaliwal.

At SBVS, specialties include Surgery, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Ophthalmology, and Oncology (cancer medicine). Patients are accepted on a referral from a primary care veterinarian basis only. Our philosophy has always been simple but focused. We will only provide the highest level of quality care and expertise to our patients and their owners.

Our facility adjoins The Emergency Animal Clinic of South San Jose. Working as a team, we combine the skill and training of our specialty veterinarians with experienced emergency veterinarians to ensure that our patients receive the best care that veterinary medicine can offer today. From the mildest injury to most critically ill, we provide the appropriate level of intensive care within the most complete critical care facility in the South Bay Area of California

24 Hour Care
When SBVS was in the planning stage, one issue important to all of us was how could we provide 24 hour care.  We believe that to offer the best care, it has to be given round the clock. Disease and discomfort are 24 hour a day problems and there is a compassionate need to treat patients 24 hours a day. South Bay Veterinary Specialists provides care for your pet with dedicated doctors and a caring staff 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Directions To SBVS
South Bay Veterinary Specialists and South Bay Veterinary Specialists Oncology are located within Thornwood Plaza on Thornwood Drive, just behind Oakridge Mall. From Thornwood Drive turn right into the second entrance to Thornwood Plaza and we are located 4 doors down on the left.

From the Los Altos/Cupertino Area
Take I-280 south to Hwy 85 South. Go south on Hwy 85 for approximately 10 miles to the Santa Teresa Blvd. exit. Turn right onto Santa Teresa Blvd and take the next right onto Thornwood Drive.

From the Milpitas/Fremont Area
Take I-680 south to I-280 north. Continue on I-280 north to Hwy 87 south (Guadalupe Parkway). Go south on Hwy 87 for approximately 4 miles to the Santa Teresa Blvd exit. Continue on straight and turn right at the third signal onto Thornwood Drive.

From the Morgan Hill/Gilroy Area
Take Hwy 101 north to Hwy 85 north. Go north on Hwy 85 for approximately 3-4 miles to the Santa Teresa Blvd exit. Turn left onto Santa Teresa Blvd and then turn right at the second signal onto Thornwood Drive.

From the Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley Area
Take Hwy 17 north to Hwy 85 south. Go south on Hwy 85 for approximately 5 miles to the Santa Teresa Blvd exit. Turn right onto Santa Teresa Blvd and then take the next right onto Thornwood Drive.

Hours
Regular business hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:30 PM.  All appointments are by referral only. At night and on weekends we are available for consultation by pager for emergencies and case management. The facility is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week so you can always speak to a Doctor or staff member about your pet at any time.
